Slowly I rowed my canoe toward Hide Away Island, my island. The oars glided gently
over the water making ripples. If you had been standing on the shore looking at the scene,
I’m sure you would have found it very picturesque. The setting sun was reflected by the
water, and over head birds flew. I didn’t take the time to enjoy the beauty though,
because I know with each stroke of the oars, I got closer to my refuge.
The minute my canoe scraped the sandy ground, I let out, and tied it securely to a
branch. Grabbing my pack, I began my trek to my fort. I first built the fort when I was
ten, all by myself, but the fort was really Chad’s idea.
Chad was my big brother. He’s the one who really discovered Hide Away Island,
but he shared it with me. It was our secret, mom, and dad never knew about it. They still
don’t know. Of course, they never did bother much with us, they’re always too busy
arguing with each other.
Vacations here at Lake Everclear were suppose to bring us together, but it seems
like they just make mom, and dad fight more. Chad use to take me to Hide Away Island
so we could get away from them. Now I go alone.
As I approach the fort a sense of relief sweeps over me. I set down my gear, and
begin to settle in for the night.
“Want some help?” a voice said startling me. I looked up, and saw a boy about my
age standing there. “Sorry if I scared you,” he apologized.
“You didn’t, and no, I don’t want help,” I said getting back to my work.
“Yeah, I Gus I didn’t scare you,” he said not going away. “After all, you need to
be really brave to spend the night here, on Beelzebub Island,” he said as I rolled out my
sleeping bag.
“It’s Hide Away Island, not Beelzebub Island,” I corrected.
“No, it’s real name is Beelzebub Island. It’s a pretty interesting story, if you want
to hear it,” he said, and continued without waiting for my answer. “It got it’s name way
before the Revolution, when this vast country was just beginning to be colonized. On this
island there lived a beautiful, young woman, all alone. The ‘holy’ puritan minister lusted
after her, but every time he tried to put the moves on her, she denied him. It was rumor
she did have a lover, but no one knows who. Well, one night, after the minister was
rejected again, he calls an emergency town meeting, and claims that the young woman was
a witch. The poor lady didn’t have a good standing with the towns people before, but
after that she was completely shunned. Then one day they somehow discovered she was
present. When the minister found out, he proclaimed she must have slept with the devil
himself. So, the minister, and all the other good puritans jump into their boats, and row
out to the island at night. They pull the woman from her bed, and led her outside, where
they had made a steak. They tied her up, and set on fire. It is said that she let out an
ungodly scream, and swore she’d have her vengeance, before the flames engulfed her.
Ever since then people come to Beelzebub, I’m sorry, ‘Hide Away’ Island, and they don’t
come back.”
“That’s a pretty good story,” I admitted, “but the last part is complete bull.”
“If you’re going to insult my story, you need to tell me your name,” he insisted.
“I’m Kat, Kat Samsa,” I said.
“Hi Kat, I’m Iran Hawk,” he said introducing himself. “What makes you think the
last part is bull?” he asked.
“I’ve slept here many times before, only to return the next day to my ‘loving’
parents.”
Noticing my sarcasm he said “So, you have parent issues.”
“I don’t think my family life is any of your business,” I said defensively. “Pulse,
I’ve been here hundreds of times, and I’ve never saw anything that could have once been
her house,” I said getting us back on the topic.
“I bet you’ve never crossed the mountains,” he said referring to the small moutain
range that divided the island into two halves.
“Of course not, there’re too dangerous,” I said.
“On the other side of the mountains is the remains of her house. I’ve seen it,” he
said. “Tomorrow we will set out for it, and don’t worry,” he said before I could protest,
“I know a safe passage through.”
“I don’t know why I’m letting you stay,” I muttered as I got into my sleeping bag.
“I know why,” Iran claimed. “It’s because you love me.”
‘Great,’ I thought to myself as I drifted asleep, ‘I’m spending the night with a
lunatic.’

“Good morning, sunshine,” Iran said waking me up with a peck on the cheek. He
just narrowly advoided my retaliatory punch. “Time to greet the day,” he said as I set up.
“For breakfast I’ve prepared this granola bar. It’s healthy, and nutritious.”
“You’re just full of clichés this morning,” I said accepting the granola bar.
“Well, hurry up! We have a full day of hiking ahead of us,” he said.

“Now, you have to be careful as you’re coming down,” Iran was saying as he led
the way out of the passage in the mountains. “You don’t know if the rocks will slip,” he
said just as the stones beneath him tumbled down. I caught him before he would have fall,
and pulled him back up.
“Like that?” I asked as I looked into his sharp, blue eyes, and noticing for the first
time how cute he is.
“Like that,” he replied looking back at me. “Come on,” he said taking my hand.
“We’re almost there.”

“I didn’t think it existed,” I admitted standing inside the rustic house.
“Surreal, isn’t it?” Iran asked. I just nodded, and walked around the one room
house. There was a small table, with two stools. There was a fireplace slowly falling
apart, and a queen size bed was near by. I sat down on the bed, and Iran joined me.
“You still haven’t told me how Chad died,” he said looking at me. During the
journey here Iran listened as I told him the story of my life.
“When Chad was 17 he started to drink a lot,” I started.
“If you don’t want to do this..,” Iran began.
“It’s okay, I want to tell you. I think he did it as another way to escape our
parents’ fighting. He was driving home one night, drunk, and he drove into a tree,” I said.
Iran took he hand, and gave it a kiss.
“It’s pretty late,” he said looking out the dirty window.
“I gusse we need to sleep here tonight,” I said.
“You don’t mind sharing a bed with me?” he asked.
“No,” I said smiling. Then he did something unexpected. He lended in, and kissed
me.

A noise woke me in the night. I was cradled in Iran’s arms, and I felt so warm,
and safe, and I would have gone back to sleep had I not heard the noise again. The door
suddenly flew open, and I saw the silhouette of a tall, lean man standing in the doorway.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment,” he said in an inhuman voice. Then I felt all
theses invisible hands pull me from the bed, and dragged me out the door. Iran woke up,
and watched as this happened, and as I screamed for him. The invisible hands took me to
a steak constructed outside the house, and tied me to it.
Iran stepped out of the house. “Help!” I screamed to him, but he just looked
away. The man who had been in the doorway stepped out from the shadows, so I could
see him. He was dressed like a pilgrim.
“You’re the minister, aren’t you?” I asked starring at him.
“I’ve been waiting for this moment,” he replied holding up a torch. Suddenly I
could see the ghosts of all the old puritans that were on this island hundreds of years ago.
“Iran, come here,” he order, and Iran obeyed. Passing him the torch he said “You know
what you have to do. Do it, and all the power that I have shown you will become yours.”
Iran looked at me, and back at the minister, and then back at me.
“I can’t do it,” he said letting the torch fall to the ground.
“What do you mean you can’t do it?” the minister asked him/
“I mean I love her, and I can’t kill her,” he answered.
“What!” the minister exploded (and I mean exploded. The tops of the surrounding
trees caught on fire.). The towns folks ghosts disappeared, and we were left by
ourselves. “We had a deal. You get her here, kill her, and then I give you all the power I
have.”
“What’s going on here?” I asked buying time, as I worked on freeing myself.
“Many years ago you live here, Katherine, and I loved you. I loved you so much
that I sold my soul to the devil for power to make you love me too. That didn’t work
though, because you already had a lover, him” the minister said pointing to Iran. “It drove
me mad, you know. The thought of him over you, so when you became pergent I had the
perfect excuse of how to get rid of you. When you were burning though, you didn’t curse
the towns people, but you called out to God to save you. That’s when lover boy showed
up, and saved you. He was a solider, so the people listened to him. I was enraged, and
used my powers to burn him from the inside out. The people ran, and we were left alone.
I told you I could bring him back, but you had to promise that you would be mine. You
refused. You said you’d never be mine, and you didn’t care what I did to you, because
you believed love would get you two through anything.
I said ‘I’ll separate you from everyone you love. You’ll go through life alone, like
you were on this island. You’ll be all alone.’ Now, Iran, it’s time for you to die,” he said
looking over at the youth. Iran just dropped over dead.
“No!” I screamed as I broke free, and ran over to him.
“You’re all alone now. Everyone you have ever loved, Chad, Iran, are dead. You
have nothing left to live for,” the minister said approaching me, and dropping a knife to
the ground. “It’ll help the pain go away,” he promised. “You can be with the people you
love again. You don’t have to be lonely anymore,” he said. I picked up the knife, and
studied it. It was very sharp. It wouldn’t take much to do the job. I grabbed it firmly,
and thrusted it into the minister’s chest.
“NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!” he shouted before he became a pail of dust. I was left alone.
“Please God, please God,” I prayed. Funny, that was the first time I’ve ever
prayed. Iran opened his eyes.
“Kat,” he mouned.
“Shhh, let’s get out of here,” I said helping him up. “We survied, Iran. Our love
survied,” I said. Then I kissed him.

The devil watched as the two teens began the dangerous trek back to the fort.
‘It’s too bad she killed him,’ he though. ‘He had been a good slave.’ Kat did him a
favor though by killing him, because despite the fact he was very powerful he was also a
prisoner of the island. It was part of the agreement. All he had to do to win his total
freedom was get Kat’s lover to kill her, or get her to commit suicide. The minister failed
in both. That didn’t bother the devil though. They would both die eventually, and until
then he’d have the challenge of cracking Kat Samsa. After all, he’s not in the business of
collecting lives, he’s in the business of collecting souls.
